Human and Environmental Development Organization (HEDO)

The Human and Environmental Development Organization (HEDO) is a non-profit initiative working to uplift rural communities, restore degraded soils, and protect Sri Lanka’s rich ecosystems—starting from the heart of the Central Province

Who We Are

Our Mission Matters

Mission: To drive community engagement in sustainable development by:

- Sharing knowledge and technology for biodiversity conservation.

- Promoting sustainable land, forest, and energy practices.

- Empowering individuals to foster harmony between people and the environment.

Upcoming Projects

Central Province Reforestation Drive (2025–2026)

A large-scale tree planting campaign aiming to restore 50+ acres of degraded land in the Central Province. Native trees, community-led planting, and long-term ecosystem management.

We're planting the seeds for a stronger, greener future. Here’s a glimpse of what’s coming next at HEDO as we continue our mission to empower communities and protect nature.

Clean Water for 10 Villages Initiative

Launching rainwater harvesting and filtration systems for 10 remote villages facing water shortages. Includes hygiene education and maintenance training for locals.

Green Schools Campaign

Introducing environmental education clubs in 20 schools, tree planting days, and nature-based learning activities to cultivate eco-awareness in young minds.

Organization Background

HEDO was established in 1995 as part of a government-led poverty eradication initiative in Sri Lanka, with support from the World Bank and Norwegian Development Fund. It has evolved into a non-profit company that promotes sustainable development and social enterprises among low-income populations.

Soil Restoration & Organic Agriculture

Healthy soil is the foundation of a sustainable future. At HEDO, we promote organic farming techniques and regenerative agriculture practices to revive degraded lands and improve food security

Community Development

HEDO works hand-in-hand with local communities to improve quality of life through sustainable development initiatives.

Environmental Conservation
Water & Sanitation

Protecting Sri Lanka’s diverse ecosystems is at the heart of our mission. From reforestation projects to wildlife protection efforts, HEDO takes an active role in preserving the island’s rich natural heritage.

Access to clean water is a basic human right, yet many rural communities still lack safe and sustainable water sources. HEDO supports the construction of rainwater harvesting systems, eco-friendly sanitation facilities, and the protection of natural springs.

As someone who cares deeply about environmental restoration and community development, I was impressed by HEDO's transparency and grassroots approach. Seeing real progress photos and updates from the field made me feel like I was part of the journey.

I donated to the clean water project last year and received regular updates showing exactly how it helped families. The team’s passion and commitment are truly inspiring. It's not just charity—it's sustainable change.
